Alcohol and Fat Loss: Can You Still Enjoy Summer Without Ruining Your Progress?

5 min read

The sun's finally out (well… for the most part), pub gardens are packed, holidays are booked, and with England into the World Cup quarter-finals, there's another excuse to get everyone together for a few drinks.

Whether it's a cold pint while watching the football, a glass of rosé in the garden or an Aperol Spritz on holiday (because let's be honest, they just taste better in the sunshine), alcohol becomes a much bigger part of life over summer.

One of the questions I get asked all the time is:

"Can I still lose weight if I drink alcohol?"

The short answer is yes.

You don't have to avoid alcohol completely to lose body fat.

But understanding the relationship between alcohol and fat loss can help you enjoy summer while still making progress towards your goals.

Does Alcohol Affect Fat Loss?

The biggest driver of fat loss is still your overall calorie intake.

If you're consistently eating more calories than you're burning, fat loss won't happen, regardless of whether those calories come from chocolate, avocado or alcohol.

What catches many people out is just how calorie-dense alcohol actually is.

Each gram of alcohol contains 7 calories.

For comparison:

  • Protein = 4 calories per gram

  • Carbohydrates = 4 calories per gram

  • Alcohol = 7 calories per gram

  • Fat = 9 calories per gram

It doesn't take long for those calories to add up.

A couple of drinks after work can easily become 400–600 calories before you've even thought about food.

What Happens To Your Body When You Drink Alcohol?

When you drink alcohol, your body immediately shifts its attention to getting rid of it.

Unlike carbohydrates, protein and fat, alcohol isn't something your body stores for later use.

Instead, your liver gets to work breaking it down as quickly as possible.

As a rough guide, your body processes around one standard drink per hour, although this varies depending on your size, sex, whether you've eaten, and how much you've had to drink.

If you've had several drinks, alcohol can stay in your system for many hours afterwards. Even when you wake up feeling fine, your body may still be recovering from processing it.

While this is happening, your body temporarily reduces fat burning because clearing the alcohol becomes the priority.

This is one of the biggest reasons people ask whether alcohol stops fat loss.

The answer is no—it simply pauses fat burning while your body processes the alcohol. Once it's finished, your body returns to normal.

One night out hasn't ruined your progress.

The Biggest Reason Alcohol Slows Weight Loss

For most people, it isn't actually the alcohol itself.

It's everything that tends to come with it.

Think about the last time you had a few drinks.

Did you suddenly fancy grilled chicken, potatoes and vegetables?

Probably not.

Alcohol lowers your inhibitions, increases cravings and makes high-calorie foods much harder to resist.

That's why one or two drinks can quickly become:

  • A takeaway on the way home

  • Sharing cheesy chips with your friends

  • Raiding the kitchen before bed

  • Ordering a full English the next morning

  • Skipping the gym because you're tired and dehydrated

None of those foods are "bad."

But if it happens every weekend, it can make staying in a calorie deficit much harder.

👉 One way to manage those post-drinking cravings is by choosing foods that keep you fuller for longer. Read my guide on The Satiety Index: The Best Foods to Keep You Fuller for Longer.

Alcohol Can Affect Recovery Too

If you're lifting weights and trying to build muscle, alcohol can also affect your recovery.

Drinking alcohol can:

  • Reduce sleep quality, even if you fall asleep quickly.

  • Increase dehydration.

  • Slow muscle recovery.

  • Leave you feeling less motivated to train the following day.

One night out won't undo months of consistency.

But regularly drinking heavily can make it harder to recover well and perform your best in the gym.

Best Alcoholic Drinks for Weight Loss

If you're trying to lose body fat, the good news is you don't have to avoid alcohol completely.

Choosing lower-calorie options simply makes it easier to stay within your calorie target.

Some of the best alcoholic drinks for weight loss include:

🥂 Prosecco (125ml) — around 80 calories

🍸 Gin & Slimline Tonic — around 95 calories

🥃 Vodka & Diet Coke or Diet Lemonade — around 95 calories

🍷 Small glass of white wine — around 120 calories

🍺 Bottle of lager (330ml) — around 130 calories

🍹 Aperol Spritz — around 150–170 calories, depending on how it's made.

Could you save a few calories by choosing vodka and Diet Coke?

Absolutely.

Am I still ordering the Aperol on holiday?

Also absolutely.

Fat loss should fit around your life—not stop you enjoying it.

Alcoholic Drinks That Are Higher in Calories

Some drinks contain far more calories than people realise.

These include:

  • Piña Coladas

  • Frozen cocktails

  • Espresso Martinis

  • Large glasses of wine

  • Pints of cider

  • Cream liqueurs

Many contain 300–500 calories or more per drink.

There's nothing wrong with having them occasionally.

It's simply worth knowing so you can make an informed choice.

Tips for Drinking Alcohol While Losing Weight

You don't need to avoid every social occasion.

Instead, focus on habits that help you stay consistent.

✔ Eat a high-protein meal before drinking.

✔ Stay hydrated throughout the evening.

✔ Choose diet or sugar-free mixers where possible.

✔ Decide how many drinks you're planning to have before you go out.

✔ Get back to your usual routine the next day instead of writing the whole weekend off.

Remember, fat loss isn't built on one perfect weekend.

It's built on hundreds of good decisions over time.

The Bottom Line

Whether you're cheering England on in the World Cup, enjoying a BBQ with friends, jetting off on holiday or sitting outside with an Aperol Spritz in the sunshine, you don't need to feel guilty for having a drink.

You can drink alcohol and still lose weight.

The key is understanding how alcohol and fat loss work together, making informed choices, and remembering that consistency always beats perfection.

One evening won't ruin your progress.

What you do over the other 95% of the year is what really matters.
